Picking the right domain!
Hello guys!
Today I am going to show you how to pick the right domain for you blog/site. This is the first thing you
should be thinking about once you have figured out what kind of website/blog you are going to have. The domain name is one of the most important things to consider. But how do you choose the right one? Here are some tips on how to choose the right one for your blog/site/business.
The first and most important thing is that it should be spell-able. Other people should be able to spell it with no problem whatsoever. You don’t want something like www.unetiaiajo.com for example. I can’t spell that, and I doubt it that you can either. (I made the name up by the way). The point is that your readers should be able to spell it easily.
Ignoring Hyphens is another thing that you should watch out for when choosing the domain name. They make the domain look ugly, and most people ignore them when typing in the domain. So instead of your
site, they end up in another site who has the same domain without the hyphen. An example of this is http://webmasters-zone.net. I own this domain. Now, I’m not going to say that it’s bad, because it’s not. But the hyphen in it makes it look ugly. People would just type it without the hyphen, so they will end up on www.webmasterszone.net for example. And you don’t want that, really, because you will lose all your direct visitors.
Having keywords on the domain name will really help you. They can really effect your ranking on search engines like Google and Yahoo. Not only it effects the ranking, but also the traffic that search engines bring to your site. You should really consider that. It’s really important to your site/blog. An example would be www.freemusiconline.com
So to recap, choosing the right domain for your site/blog is one of the most important things you should consider. You should make sure that your readers and visitors can spell it correctly, avoid hyphens, and use keywords. Now that you learned some tips, make sure you use them on your next domain purchase.

First off, great post Clydee. But, I have a question: why does hyphens in domains make it look ugly?
Mmm, yes, having keywords relevant to the site really counts.

Hello Wong.
That’s a great question. I don’t know why, but for some reason, people don’t like hyphens. Now, i don’t know why, but I for example, don’t like them. I don’t know why, but I don’t like them.

Nice post, hyphens really don’t make a domain ugly just unattractive, plus they are harder to advertise. You have to make sure people remember the hyphen.
Just 1 things you sorta missed, I know you sorta touched on it with the spell-able domains but they should be easy to remember. Cause technically mymoneymakingblogonwordpress.com is easy to spell but hard to remember.

I feel like having a killer domain name is one of the most important factors to immediate success. Either you have a domain name that is well-targeted from the get go, or you chose a unique name that will stick in someones head like “themmblog”. Simple, but effective. At any rate, picking the right domain is important and you left some great pointers… right on!

Great post! You managed to point out some basic aspects of picking up a domain name. However, the title may be a misnomer in that picking the right domain name is more than just looking for hyphens (or lack of it) and having keywords. In fact you can have a keyword rich domain name that may extend to 20+ characters. Clearly not a wise choice. You will definitely loose a lot of “type in traffic” with this approach.
I have myself written a blog entry about picking up the right domain name. You can have a peek here
Thanks
